I’ve pretty much convinced myself that Trumpism is the direct result of the marriage of Christian fundamentalism with the old GOP. While there are plenty of right-wingers who are not Christians, the majority are, and they are of the fundamentalist kind.
More so, it has been the reactionary movement against the changes in the US during the 1960’s that grew to the monster that we now have.
And part of that reactionary movement was to put God “back in” the classroom, which is exactly where P.E.J. comes in.

A lot of libertarian types like myself have been run out of the party, especially as the conservochristian version of populism started to take over. I think a lot of the old style establishment defense and budget hawk types have also been run out. And that’s basically left the GOP as the worst possible form of a European style Christian Democratic party.

“pure” nationalism is a bit different than religious/racial nationalism. In the later, religion and/or race are central to defining the nation (particularly the “people”). In the former, religious and racial differences are downplayed for the sake of the national identity. Granted, that rarely holds because nationalist leaders need someone to blame their failed policies on, so they inevitably turn from enemies without to enemies within.

I think we’ve had this conversation around here before, but I always feel like the obvious argument against intelligent design (or creationism more generally) is that humans are actually piss poorly designed. Brittle bones, easily punctured skin, an immune system that will turn against itself, reproduction and waste disposal using the same parts, vision is poor and always failing, bad hearing, bad sense of smell, only two sets of teeth for a life time (which don’t even all fit), slow, not particularly strong… like that gets a failing most design classes.

where they, and most other ‘explanations’ run into trouble is the misuse of the word belief as i stated in re: #77 DangerMan (misuser of the sarc tag)
there are only two lanes
you have to pick one.
if you’re making a statement of belief that something is a ‘fact’ (colloquial), then it’s subject to the same standards and scrutiny as any other fact. and it’ll stand or fall based on the merits of inquiry, discovery, and conclusion.
if you’re making a statement of belief without proof, then you can believe anything you want and no one has any obligation to accept, agree, or believe as you do.
(nor, imo should anyone else argue or debate it. it’s faith)

re: #79 Charles Johnson
Intelligent design was never intended to actually make sense. It’s bullshit dressed up in vaguely scientific language - deliberately deceptive, thinly disguised creationism.
The guy who first proposed it had some interesting ideas and questions (although he very well may have been motivated by theistic belief). Irreducible complexity is an idea that would constitute a valid critique of the theory of evolution (even though the supposed examples of it did not actually show irreducible complexity).
But everything past that initial idea is exactly as you describe. The court case which invalidated the teaching of ID showed that the primary textbook that was being used to teach intelligent design was shown to simply be a version of creationist text where simply replaced all references to creationism with intelligent design (and I mean that in a literal sense).
re: #89 Hecuba’s daughter
Legal question: If the government is not paying you for your services, can you claim executive privilege? What private conversations are legally protected that could apply in this situation? Certainly not client-lawyer privilege.
Not my area of expertise, but I don’t think there’s a lot of case law on what constitutes executive privilege even generally, let alone specifically. But I do believe, at least based on tradition, that the president has been able to claim executive privilege with respect to conversations with non-government employees/private citizens. The idea being that sometimes the president/executive branch needs to talk to people not in the government to get different perspectives/ideas/advice and that those conversations, as part of the deliberative process, are protected.
But I don’t know if there’s case law about who holds the privilege and who can waive it and all that fun stuff.

- i agree 100% though i have no problem with ID as an (er) idea.
- the problem is when they change lanes and make it ‘scientific’ without doing any of the work.

Neither the universe, nor life in it, requires the existence of a God.
That is true. But a reminder: the scientific theories so far have no explanation for the origin of the Big Bang and the state of the universe (or whatever existed) prior to the Big Bang. Science explained what happened but not really how.

A central driving force behind nationalism is the othering of… well, everyone else.
It is possible to be proud of one’s country without having to hate or demean or marginalize others, but the with-us-or-against-us mentality always seems to win out with them

re: #100 KGxvi
Not my area of expertise, but I don’t think there’s a lot of case law on what constitutes executive privilege even generally, let alone specifically. But I do believe, at least based on tradition, that the president has been able to claim executive privilege with respect to conversations with non-government employees/private citizens. The idea being that sometimes the president/executive branch needs to talk to people not in the government to get different perspectives/ideas/advice and that those conversations, as part of the deliberative process, are protected.
But I don’t know if there’s case law about who holds the privilege and who can waive it and all that fun stuff.
There’s no way that a President can constrain anybody not currently working in the White House against that person’s will. If they want to comply either voluntarily or in response to a subpoena the Courts will let them.

Big Bang is not independently repeatable. Though there are testable observations based on this theory.
re: #77 DangerMan (misuser of the sarc tag)
- you are perfectly welcome to believe (faith without benefit of proof) in the idea ‘goddidit’. it is by definition subjective, and the standards of evidence - in any other but a personally acceptable sense of the word, do not apply.
- you are not welcome to believe that ‘goddidit’ is an explanation everyone must see and accept. that is an assertion of generally accepted objective universal truth (such that there can be one). for that you need to do the math and science, provide proof and show your work.

I agree, and the rational offered for this particular form of executive privilege in US v Nixon was:
[h]uman experience teaches that those who expect public dissemination of their remarks may well temper candor with a concern for appearances and for their own interests to the detriment of the decisionmaking process.
So you could actually argue that the person giving advice/counsel holds the privilege rather than the president. But as I’ve said, there’s very little case law on it, and is one of the few remaining grey areas of constitutional law.

We have to be glad this guy was his own lawyer as a question from the lower court was not properly preserved.
The Supreme Court said its finding that the agreement was enforceable makes moot Goodwin’s argument about preserving human life. What’s more, Goodwin, who acted as his own lawyer during the divorce, did not raise the issue of preserving life at the trial court, so it is not reviewable on appeal.

And when Wilson tried to apply those criteria to the remains of that enormous cultural/linguistic/ethnic clusterfuck called the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the results were a mass of arbitrary lines that let to generations of ongoing war and chaos…

Three creationists talking about God:
The first one comments, “God must be a mechanical engineer, just look at the intricate system of bones, tendons, muscles and ligaments!”
“No.” says the second one, God must be an electrical engineer:, how else could he have conceived of the human brain and nervous system?”
“God is a civil engineer,” counters the third: “Who else would have put a sewer outlet right in the middle of a recreation area?”

Another way of saying much the same thing is this:
Goddidit explains nothing precisely because it ‘explains’ everything. Absolutely everything can be hand waved away with ‘goddidit’, making it the perfect refuge for the willfully stupid and the incorrigibly lazy.
IMO the real definition of science is simply the agreement to reject goddidit and anything similar as explanations. With that settled, the only game in town is experiment/observations and rational theory-crafting. Centuries of success with this scientific approach has proven its validity wherever it applies.

Nationalism is not needed in America especially espoused by the people who have been in charge of the country from the inception i.e. pudgy white guys like Rich.
By ‘nationalism’ I mean first of all the habit of assuming that human beings can be classified like insects and that whole blocks of millions or tens of millions of people can be confidently labelled ‘good’ or ‘bad’.[1] But secondly - and this is much more important - I mean the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests. Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.

They’re definitely worth reading, most of them anyway. He thinks a lot about this, and obviously just before WWII it became important indeed. The whole essay is available here.
ETA another good paragraph:
It is also worth emphasizing once again that nationalist feeling can be purely negative. There are, for example, Trotskyists who have become simply enemies of the U.S.S.R. without developing a corresponding loyalty to any other unit. When one grasps the implications of this, the nature of what I mean by nationalism becomes a good deal clearer. A nationalist is one who thinks solely, or mainly, in terms of competitive prestige. He may be a positive or a negative nationalist – that is, he may use his mental energy either in boosting or in denigrating – but at any rate his thoughts always turn on victories, defeats, triumphs and humiliations. He sees history, especially contemporary history, as the endless rise and decline of great power units, and every event that happens seems to him a demonstration that his own side is on the up-grade and some hated rival is on the down-grade. But finally, it is important not to confuse nationalism with mere worship of success. The nationalist does not go on the principle of simply ganging up with the strongest side. On the contrary, having picked his side, he persuades himself that it is the strongest, and is able to stick to his belief even when the facts are overwhelmingly against him. Nationalism is power hunger tempered by self-deception. Every nationalist is capable of the most flagrant dishonesty, but he is also – since he is conscious of serving something bigger than himself – unshakeably certain of being in the right.

I’m reading the essay. He gets it immediately when he talks about how the nationalist breaks down entire groups as being absolutely good or evil and that the nationalist sees history only in our greatest victories and humiliations. That’s exactly what Nazism was. You can even see it in how some of the Nazis got into the pagan stuff even if that vastly predated united Germany.

I think we can count on two things: He’ll get more cheers than boos, and that the media will ignore the boos at the previous two appearances to claim that he “remains popular among voters” despite polls showing he’s been dragging the bottom for weeks.

I’m getting all sorts of tickled over seeing House Repubs whining that the very transcripts they demanded be released are being “cherry-picked.”
Trump’s disapproval rating has hit 55% on 538’s aggregate of polls, Trump’s highest disapproval rating since the shutdown in February.

There’s going to be a race to cash in once he’s out. Motherfuckers are going to try and sell us all kinds of crazy ass justifications about how they stayed on and humored him just to try to reign his most infantile impulses in and keep him from nuking the planet. His trajectory towards complete mental breakdown is unalterable and what comes out afterwards is going to be completely banana pants. Honestly I kind of doubt it, just because that might be the one thing that could prompt a veto proof override of a budget bill. It would be absolute political suicide.

Not to mention that, unlike the last go-around, this one will involve defense funding. That’s a political nightmare no Republican will want to face: Voting “Nay” or simply refusing to hold a vote on paying troops just weeks before the holidays in defense of an increasingly unpopular president*. “God did it”
First define each of these three words in a testable, repeatable way.
I am ok with that sentence, but only in one pretty narrow context.
Back East there was, briefly, a band called The Gypsy Stretch Mark Orchestra. I think the full name was Captain Testosterone and The Gypsy Stretch Mark Orchestra. They had a song called “God Did It” which, if I recall correctly (this was very early 90’s so who knows) was about blaming God for things one does not wish to cop to.
I just spent some time looking for it online so I could share the goodness but so far I have struck out.
The worst risk we probably face right now is how desperate Bill Barr, Pompeo and Pence become to cover up their own criminal complicity. If they can convince Trump to resign and install Pence via the back door they might try to destroy as many records as possible and then cover everyone’s asses with pardons. But would they trust Pence to actually do that, I wouldn’t. Pence has his own ambitions that probably don’t dovetail well with being the last one left holding the bag.

certainly trump cant issue those pardons (let alone for himself) before he’d go
so it has to be pence
pence is not squeaky clean in all this the way Gerald Ford was
a massive pardoning will be a hell of a tell
and i think then there might be some way to challenge the validity: can you direct or coerce others to commit acts, omissions, or actual crimes and conspiracies (obstruction of justice, violations of oath of office) as directed by the president and for which he is a part, and then arrange pardons for them all
it’s self pardoning one degree removed and would literally put them all above the law

Not to mention the fact that trying to hold government funding hostage to a curtailment/cancellation of the House impeachment hearings is likely to be viewed as basically even more of an admission of guilt on Trump & cronies’ part than even the tacit “confessions” which have been leaking out all over already. Shutdowns aren’t popular at any time: especially with holidays coming up: provoking one as blackmail even less so.
So still even-odds that Trump will try it.

I’m gonna say that tomorrow’s results will make or break Repub support for Trump in the short-term, if not the long-term. You’re going to see a lot of very strained faces come Wednesday if the elections result in anything less than a red wave. If they win the gubernatorial races and hold the legislatures up for grabs, they’ll feel they can weather the storm and push forward with total obstruction. Anything else and you’re going to hear a lot more grumbling about ditching Donny.

Broken record here: polls are not worth the pixels that display them. We are living in a Literary Digest world where getting a true random sample of the voting population has become a herculean task that may have reached the “impossible to perform successfully” stage. Even ignoring this obstacle, at this point in the election cycle, most people are not paying much attention and won’t until the field has dwindled significantly in size. In any case, who knows what news or dishonest stories will seize the public imagination during the general election.

I do like Michelle Goldberg but her assertion that Trump “is insecure about Russia’s role in his election” is based on a faulty premise that Trump cares whether Russia manipulated the vote to gain him the White House; his only insecurity is the fear that the truth will come out that Russia intervened directly in voting process. He knows that Russia intervened with their propaganda to support him; he said openly months ago that he didn’t see any problems with getting foreign assistance. Neither he nor any Republican cares if the voting machines are hacked to their benefit.

Yeah perch is good eating. And walleye eat the perch and are good eating too. When out fishing as night is falling and something annoying is hitting your bait. Just small enough to not be able to get the bigger hook into its mouth, you know it is perch moving through. And give it a bit and the walleye will be through following the perch. The hook is just the right size for them :-)

My favorite news story that involved the Franklin Institute was many years ago when they had a McDonalds eatery in the museum. They were giving out those brightly colored McDonalland glasses. There was a report that there might be too much lead in the paint used on the glasses. Everyone was waiting for the report from the CDC to come out and it was on a weekend. The Franklin Institute ran a lead test on a set of glasses and did find out that there was a lot of lead in the paint. Perhaps by special arrangement—the tours offered that day were 1-hour guided-only, along the rim paths. They seem determined to protect the place, and are tied into .gov and .edu worlds. Obedience class, STAT. You need to know how to control her. You have to be the alpha. An obedience class will fix you both right up, give you the road you need to train her Anna help her understand that YOU’re the alpha bitch in the house.
My next door neighbor was really interested in getting German Shepherds about 15 years ago. So she did research, identified contacts, and worked with a breeder. She ended up adopting three from various places and of differing ages. When they passed due to age, she adopted 3 more.
She mentioned that the obedience classes were extremely important. Not only for her to relate to her dogs, but also to ensure that the doggos were well behaved towards others. (Such as neighbors, like me, and passersby.) And yes, she is the undisputed alpha. I have never seen any of the puppers ever challenge her.

I probably shouldn’t admit that I remember The Jaggerz. Back before national bands wiped out local music scenes.

I am still trying to place one local group from back in the early 1960’s. The little I remember from over half a century ago is the refrain “On the Southside of Pittsburgh”.

The VA GOP are scared shitless about tomorrow, because the entire General Assembly is going to the polls and there’s a very real chance that this time tomorrow night, we’ll be celebrating the end of Republican rule of this state for the first time in decades.

I see many on social media and writing columns wetting their pants that MFA will deliver Trump in 2020.
Effing let them wring hands until blisters form. Nobody should shrink from the big ask when the heart of our soul as a nation is in question. Sorry to yell but this is a time to step up, unapologetic. Go big.
Rand Paul. Name sounds familiar. Wait, isn’t he Trump’s carrier pigeon for love letters to Putin in Moscow?

That’s such a cool song. The fuzz bass, harmonies, handclaps & cowbell on the chorus… One of my faves from that time.
My first real drum set was the same Rogers kit as in that picture, except mine had a blue and black zig-zag swirl finish (I can’t remember what they called it). Traded it in for a more hard rock Slingerland kit in the early and mid 70’s. I still have those.

So experts are claiming that the ruling on Trump’s tax returns is so narrowly drawn, it is not likely to be reversed and SCOTUS should refuse even to hear the case. But I don’t have any confidence in the current GOP appointed justices.
Katzmann grounded Monday’s ruling in the 1974 landmark decision in United States v. Nixon, which declared the president cannot be shielded from a criminal investigation. But what is to prevent this court from overruling the 1974 case and adopting the Barr position that the President is immune from investigation as long as they remain in office? IANAL but perhaps one of our legal lizards can reassure me that this SC has some modicum of ethics.

My parents were unenthusiastic with the concept of me learning drums. The end result was I hauled a cello around for a while before losing interest in carrying it to and from school. A female cousin did persevere learning the drums and, I am told, ended up carrying the bass drums in the University of Michigan marching band back in the 1970’s.

I very much doubt the ruling will be overturned, just because Roberts seems pretty sick of Trump’s shit and wouldn’t go for it. My fear is that it only takes four Justices to hear the case, which would slow things down and possibly delay a final ruling until after the election. I can definitely see Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas going that route.

Found a picture of the ‘Onyx Blue’ first real drum set I kind of roped my dad into buying for me in 1969.

And I could totally see them going that route, figuring that the ruling won’t really matter either way.

If they do try hearing it as a stalling tactic I could see Roberts siding with the four liberal Justices to immediately fast track the case and get it over with ASAP. Yes, he’s a shit head, but a shit head with a long term view towards not seeing the Court further delegitimized by stunts like this.

I learned how to play in the junior high and senior high bands. The only time we marched was during homecoming football games. I learned how to play the drum kit by stacking 45’s on a record player and playing along with them (songs like ‘Incense and Peppermints’ by the Strawberry Alarm Clock). I was always pretty song oriented and wasn’t really interested in soloing.
re: #407 stpaulbear
Cool drum set! Did you use cymbals with it?
You showed a lot more determination than I did. And it sounds like you had a bunch of fun with it.
